The clitoris is biologically equivalent to the penis. Therefore, male and female erections and orgasms are very similar. Behind the clitoral tip -- which is equivalent to the head of the penis -- is what is called the “clitoral stem.” In females, the parasympathetic nervous system causes vasodilatation of the arteries into the female erectile tissues found in the clitoris and the region around the vaginal entrance. Because of vasodilatation, the blood supply to these tissues increase and they swell. This is the female erection.
What happens exactly during a penis erection? Very simply put, when a man becomes sexually aroused, blood flows into his penis at a faster rate than it flows out. This is called "vasocongestion." The penis becomes larger and harder -- what we refer to as an erection. As long as the blood flow into the penis remains at this faster rate, the erection will be sustained.
There is a long-standing debate between men (and women!) over which is preferred: a circumcised penis or an uncircumcised penis. In other words, the surgical removal of the top-most sheath of skin that covers the head of the penis. On one hand, it can be argued that circumcised penises are easier to keep clean. Also, for some people, circumcision means a more aesthetically pleasing penis as well. However, a strong case is also made that the tip of the uncircumcised penis is more sensitive, as it is kept covered most of the time. In the end, it's a matter of personal taste.
Does size really matter? Most sex experts agree that when it comes to making love, skill is more important than size of one's penis. Still, men can't help but wonder if they measure up. So how big is the average erect penis? Most studies place the average erect penis length at 5.5 to 6.5 inches, and the average circumference at 4.5 to 5 inches.
At some point in nearly every man's life he may experience erection difficulty. In most cases, there is no cause for alarm. Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection once in a while is a very normal occurrence. It can be caused by something as simple as every day stress. If difficulties continue over longer periods of time, it's best to seek the help of a medical professional who may be able to better assess your situation.
